Scale With AMP / Retail readiness guide
The buyer’s checklist, from the insideHow to get your beauty brand retail ready.
Great products get noticed. Ready brands get chosen. These ten criteria come from AMP’s own sales data and our work with 250+ independent brands across retailers like Target and Macy’s. It’s the same bar we use to decide which brands we take to retail.
Run the checklist.
Tick what you could prove to a buyer today, with numbers or documents rather than intentions.
The AMP Retail Standard.
Ten criteria in five groups.
1. Clear consumer problem & differentiation
A value proposition buyers grasp in seconds, and a reason consumers choose you.
How to show it: Say what the product does, who it’s for and why it beats what’s already on the shelf in one sentence. If it takes a paragraph, a buyer scanning hundreds of submissions won’t get there.
2. Validated consumer demand
Reviews, repeat purchase, sell-through, community. Evidence, not hope.
How to show it: Bring your own numbers: review count and rating, repeat-purchase rate, and sell-through at any store that already carries you. One real metric does more than any adjective.
3. Distinct brand positioning
A compelling story, a defined customer, a clear competitive edge.
How to show it: Name your customer specifically and keep the identity consistent everywhere: logo, brand kit, colors, voice. A buyer should recognize the brand from the packaging alone.
4. Brand equity & community
Loyalty, creator advocacy, retention. An audience that converts.
How to show it: Show retention and real advocacy, such as returning customers, creator content you didn’t pay for, and an engaged list. Follower counts matter less than proof that the audience buys.
5. Healthy unit economics
Gross margin, wholesale pricing, and contribution margin that scale.
How to show it: Know your cost of goods per unit and your margin at the wholesale price, after freight, fees and promotions. Check this before a buyer does it for you.
6. Retail pricing strategy
Architecture that works across DTC, wholesale, and national retail.
How to show it: Set MSRP, wholesale and DTC prices that leave the retailer room for their margin and stay consistent across channels. A price that only works on your own site will stall at the first buyer meeting.
7. Scalable operations
Manufacturing, fulfillment, and inventory built for retail growth.
How to show it: Confirm your manufacturer can handle a bigger order, know your lead times, and plan inventory so you stay in stock. A buyer can’t keep a product on the shelf that keeps running out.
8. Supply chain & compliance
FDA/GMP, QA, traceability, and retailer documentation.
How to show it: Have the paperwork ready before you’re asked: verified UPCs, Material Safety Data Sheets where applicable, and quality and traceability records. Some retailers add their own certifications, like WERCSmart for Target.com.
9. Retail-ready sales assets
Pitch deck, line sheets, merchandising, and sales materials.
How to show it: Build a wholesale deck and line sheet, high-resolution product photos on white or transparent backgrounds, and clean product copy. Buyers judge the brand by how easy it is to say yes.
10. Retail growth mindset
Coachability, execution discipline, readiness for the long game.
How to show it: Treat feedback from buyers as data, follow through on what you commit to, and plan for retail to take longer than DTC. Buyers back founders they trust to execute.
